People travel differently. Some want guided tours, some want extreme sports, others want to rest in a beautiful area, some want to live among locals, while others want to stroll around foreign cities. The list is endless. Before launching yourself into a full off-grid trip, you may want to test your adventure level.
In 2015, my fiancé and I took a little vacation to an off-grid cabin in the woods, the Lone Wolf Cabin. It was perfect for us, incredible place.
We were celebrating our 10th anniversary, but we also wanted to test how it was to live without electricity and your day-to-day commodities. We love adventure and we dream one day to have a self-sufficient house somewhere in the country. We're not sure where in the world yet, and that’s one of the reasons we travel.
Watch the video made by my fiancé Ric Rags.
The cabin is lost in the woods and can only be reached via a short canoe ride. There's also a little path in the forest, but you cannot haul your gear through there. It really gave us a taste of adventure, while being only 25 minutes away from Ottawa. In case of an issue, we could jump back in the canoe, paddle across the little pond, get in the car, and drive to Ottawa.
The cabin has a sauna and a Japanese ofuro. They're powered by firewood. Therefore, we had to practice lighting up fire and chopping wood. It was the middle of June in Quebec, which means you get to deal with a lot of horse flies. The toilet is an outhouse, but there is also an indoor bathroom with a toilet… for number ones only. The shower is a battery powered pump you place in a bucket.
All that to say that we had a great time and got to experience some remote adventure in small dose and controlled environment. We even had a bit of fun with the fur coats (in June) and the canoe. You don’t get much more traditional Quebecker than that!
When surrounded by nature, you encounter wildlife, including big bugs. You may want to see how you react to these. Can you be around them and let them be? Please, don’t start smashing them. You are visiting their environment. You are the guest. They live there, they are part of it.
For us, this test was a success. We know that we can go by with little, we enjoy using survival skills, we don’t miss tv, and we are not bothered by the surrounding wildlife (we didn't encounter any black bears). We also know that we like to get moving after three or four days of full relaxation. We did play a lot of Trivial Pursuit very late into the night. :D After four days, we got itchy feet, so we crossed back the pond, and went for a little visit in the nearby town.
Based on what you'd like to do, try to find a smaller, less expensive, and close by version of it. Go on a mini-adventure to see what you like, don’t like, and would like to be better prepared for.
Who Am I? I'm many things. I'm passionate about tons of stuff. I love travel. I love self-improvement. I'm a sucker for optimization, efficiency, and minimalism. I renewed with mathematics and science, those are so amazing. Astronomy and chemistry are just plain awesome! I'm a student, a mentor, a traveler, a learner, an artist, an animator, and Disney brings me tears of joy! I love to grow and I will never stop! So who am I? All that and everything else I have not discovered about myself yet. It's a never ending answer!
