I love California. In the past year, I took the definite decision to come back with my fiancé et drive on the coast. We stayed in a hotel and an AirBnB. We rented a car and drove around Southern California.
What did we learn on this trip?
Staying in a hotel is expensive, we knew that. Our hotel was nice. It had a salt water pool and a gym. It also had excellent service. These were great points. Actually, if you are going to Burbank, I recommend you stay at the Burbank Courtyard Marriott Apt. on Empire street. It's two miles down from the one beside Bob Hope airport. All their rooms are equipped with a small refrigerator.
So, what did we learn? The size of the refrigerator and the ability to cook matter. We don't go to restaurants so much. We try to be on a permanent health and exercise lifestyle. We may go once in ten days and we try to make healthy choices. With a small refrigerator and no stove, you can only buy a small quantity of food at a time. We spent A LOT of money at the grocery store, almost as much as if we went to restaurants. Every day, we would end up spending over 60$ USD at Ralph's, Vons, andother stores. Whichever one we tried, the resulting bill was the same. As soon as we moved to our AirBnB, we were able to go to Costco and do a proper grocery. It cost us 106$ USD for five days and we had plenty, not to mention that Costco over there has pretty much everything organic!
What else did we learn?
Renting an economy or compact car allows you to save a ton of money in rental price and gas, especially if you bid the price on priceline.com. We drove very long distances, therefore the gas efficiency mattered. For five or 6 days and over 900 miles, we spent about 72$ USD in gas.
What did we see?
We went to Malibu! I got my picture taken with a lifeguard, but mainly, I did yoga on the beach. Another tick mark on my bucket list!
We went to the Chinese Theatre to see Suicide Squad. We hiked the Hollywood hills with our AirBnb host. We saw Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and binary stars with our own eyes at the Griffith Observatory.
The two highlights of the trip were the magnificent Sequoias National Park and the breathtaking Red Rock Canyon National Park. We were completely mesmerized. Yet another tick mark on my bucket list. I always wanted to drive in the US desert and see red rocks.
What did we take from this trip?
It's a confirmed fact that we love California and road trips. We also realized that most of the places we wanted to explore were in Northern California. This trip was a teaser for us. By testing it out, we know we are ready to invest and prepare for a much larger scale road trip all along the West coast, from Canada to San Diego! This is our new big project.
Did you do a long road trip or visit the West coast? You can share your experience in the comments section.
