Natural Shampoo and Lemon Conditioner to Wash Your Hair

Natural Shampoo and Lemon Conditioner to Wash Your Hair

Chemical products and artificial fragrances are everywhere. We put those on our skin and eat them every day. Over time, this can cause harm and illness. This year, I’m switching any body care products to natural homemade products. I started this week with the natural shampoo and conditioner. I’m testing it out and so far it’s fabulous.

One of the things motivating this choice is that beside wanting to be healthy, I want to make conscious choices and develop awareness. Instead of blindly buying products because of an advertisement or because it smells good, I want to decide what goes in or on my body. I want to know what’s in it and I want to keep it to a minimum.

Every time I use Dove products, I get really bad skin reactions. It can either be the bodywash, soap, or shampoo. I get a rash or really big and painful zits on my shoulders. I hadn’t made the connection at first. I thought I had greasy skin and Dove products are supposed to be so mild. Other people have confirmed the same thing to me. It went away as soon as I stopped using it.

When people make jokes about my health choices, I can’t help but wonder how it came down to that. People make fun of others for choosing what goes inside their body, the sole thing keeping them alive. I really don’t care what television and others say. I aim for intentional living and conscious choices. I choose health.

I already don’t use makeup or hair products. It doesn’t feel comfortable, it takes space, I can’t touch my hair or my face, and it costs a lot of money. I’m not to sure why I have to colour my face. It works for other, not for me. If you want to wear make up and use hair products, go for it. I really don’t want to stop you. I only want to share my point of you in case it inspires or helps you.

For a couple months, I kept saying that I wanted to try homemade shampoo. Everything I found still involved a bunch of fancy fragrance and chemicals. I was not really enthused by that. Then, I found two blog articles on using baking soda and vinegar or lemon juice. Bingo!

This week, I finally made it happen. I will be testing this out for the upcoming two months. If it works, then I will stick with it! The first test is very successful so far. My hair is shinny and soft, no issue so far. I washed it following the instructions and did the simplest hair dry possible. I will say that conditioning my hair with lemon juice smelled really nice!

It’s possible that over the first few weeks, my scalp with get a bit greasier as it adjusts to the new product. I think the benefits will build over the next 30 days.

I'll update this article with the additional results and observations.

Here's what I used based on the two articles listed below. I adjusted it to fit my little travel bottles for convenience. You may need to adjust the parts and quantities for your own hair by testing it out.

Shampoo

  • 1 part baking soda, 3 parts water

Conditioner

  • 1 part lemon juice, 4 parts water
